BREWING METHOD
There are many ways to brew coffee. The brewing method closest to the one used by professionals when they judge coffees is the French Press. That's what we personally use and what we recommend to our customers. If you can afford it, get a metal one. They last longer and keep the coffee warmer.
COFFEE
Use only fresh roasted whole bean coffee and grind the coffee right before you pour the water into the pot or brewer. You'd be surprised at what a difference freshness makes.
GRIND
You want to use a coarse grind with a french press. Other brewing methods will require a different grind setting. If you don't already have one, you probably want to consider purchasing a burr grinder. This type of grinder will allow you to better regulate the grind.
WATER
Don't overlook the water you put in brewer! Most of what's in your cup is water, so use filtered water. Stay away from unfiltered city water or distilled water.
TEMPERATURE
The ideal temperature for brewing coffee is between 195 and 205 degrees. DON'T USE BOILING WATER. You want to use water that is right about to boil.
HOW MUCH COFFEE
The general rule is 2 level tablespoons for every 8 oz of water. We generally use a 1/2 cup of whole beans for our 32 oz. french press, and when the water is about to boil, we grind them and pour the grinds into the french press, followed by the water, which has not yet boiled.
